How to play a Network (LAN) or Internet game...

Postby GamePlayHeaven » Mon Sep 14, 2009 0:40

A Network (LAN) or Internet game consists of 2 players.
First, one player must host a game.
Next, the other player must join the game hosted by the first player.

Before you start...
Make sure you're both using the latest version of the game.

Hosting a network game
Hosting a network game is the easy part.
Go to the GameSelect screen, select the network game icon (looks like a globe) and select "Host a game".
The message "Hosting Server..." will appear on screen, and after a few seconds the network lobby will appear on screen.

Make note of the "Hosting Server" message at the top of the network lobby screen, as the other player will need 1 of the IP Addresses in it to connect to your server.
For example: "Hosting Server at LAN IP Address: 888.888.888.888 and Internet IP Address: 999.999.999.999".

Joining a game
Once the first player has started the server, the second player can join the network game.
Go to the GameSelect screen, select the network game icon (looks like a globe) and select "Connect to a game".
A messagebox "Connect to IP Address:" will appear on screen, asking you for the IP Address of the server.
Here you type the IP Address of the Host's PC (including dots) and press Enter. For LAN games this should be the Server's LAN IP address (888.888.888.888 in our example above) and for Internet games, this should be the Server's Internet IP address (999.999.999.999 in our example above).

After pressing enter, a message "Awaiting Server confirmation..." will appear.
If the server is running, the second player will join the lobby.
If the server can't be found (or won't respond) a timeout message will appear, and the player is directed back to the main menu.

Starting a game
The player who joined the game has to select the option "Notify server that you're ready" and press Enter.
After this, the player who is hosting the game can select the option "Start a network game" and press Enter.
After the host will determine a game type (CoOp/HaCKMaTCH), the game will start.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my LAN IP Address?
Your LAN IP address will be shown at the top of the network lobby screen when you Host a game.
There will be a message reading: "Hosting Server at LAN IP Address: 888.888.888.888 and Internet IP Address: 999.999.999.999".

How do I find my Internet IP Address?
Your Internet IP address will be shown at the top of the network lobby screen when you Host a game.
There will be a message reading: "Hosting Server at LAN IP Address: 888.888.888.888 and Internet IP Address: 999.999.999.999".

If there is no 999 number, but instead an "*unkown*" text, then your Internet IP address can be found by going to http://www.whatismyip.com.
At the top of the screen there should be a message reading: "Your IP Address Is: 999.999.999.999".

What network port does the game use?
The game uses port 5015 to communicate between the client and server.
You might have to open this port in your firewall settings if the client can't connect to the server.
Here is an example of how to do this under WindowsXP.

Uhm... wow.. what just happened?
Internet/LAN games have been tested and work, but there are still some glitches.
If you encounter any bugs during online play, please take some time to email HaCKaH_Online_Bugs@GamePlayHeaven.com.
I'll try to hunt the bug down and post a new(fixed) version ASAP.

Enjoy the game,
Michaël

Tip: How to successfully connect to an Internet host via a router

With v2.0.0 (the 10 Year Anniversary Edition) obviously the connection port has changed (from previously 5005) to now port 5015.

So those people who connect to the Internet using a router need to enable port forwarding (in the router) of port 5015 to the LAN IP address of the gaming computer.

Modified the default port nr in the original post, thanks for the reminder.

It's also possible to set your own port nr, by manually editing it in the HaCKeR.cfg file.
